This true story will encourage children to never give up. One evening, five-year-old Saroo left his poor village home in India to watch his older brother work at the next towns train station. A small black and white drawing under the main text on each page is a nice addition. He has obviously used real photographs of the people involved and typical Indian scenes to create lifelike pictures of the story. The atmospheric, colourful illustrations by Bruce Whately, (of Diary of a Wombat fame), are almost like photographs. It has successfully made the transition to picture book so this incredible story is now accessible to children. Little Lion is a powerful story of loss, perseverance, love, and family. Twenty-five years later, after discovering Google Earth, Saroo thinks he has discovered where he has come from. He is eventually adopted by Tasmanian couple Sue and John Brierly, and moves to Australia. This true story is very well written and puts you in the shoes of Saroo who, as an adult, wants to find back his. And so begins his story of searching, trying to keep safe on the streets of India and then finding his way through pure good fortune to people who are able to look after him and find him a new home. Both the book and the film are very touching. Thats not to fault the books author and subject Saroo.

I want to say that I don’t normally read novels, since I prefer non-fiction books. If you have the choice, read the book first and then watch the movie! After all, the book was written by Saroo himself, but the movie was created by an entire team of people who brought in their own influence. I loved both, but the book felt a bit more personal and raw than the movie. But I found the story so moving that I wanted to read the book too.
I watched the movie “Lion” not knowing much about it and the book behind it. Well, I did it the other way but not on purpose.
I know that it’s advisable to read a book and then watch the movie. It is a compelling and impressive story about getting lost, finding a new family and searching for his way back home.
He tells his story about the way he lived as a child, how he tragically got separated from his family and the way his life evolved after that. Lion is a memoir about a little boy who got lost in India.
